Ivan Shafran’osh

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Ivan Shafranyosh was born on December 10, 1941 in the village of Baranyntsi, Uzhgorod district, the Transcarpathian region. He received secondary education at the Uzhgorod Evening School for Labor Youth №1 in 1958.. After his mandatory service in the army (1961-1964), he was enrolled in the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Uzhgorod State University, and graduated in 1969. In September 1969, Shafranyosh entered the postgraduate studies at the Department of Quantum Electronics and studied the processes of excitation and ionization of atoms in electron-atomic collisions for three years under the guidance of professors Zapesochny I.P. and Alexsakhin I.S. At the Leningrad State University, he has defended the thesis “Investigation of the methods and study of processes of excitation and ionization from metastable states of strontium and barium atoms by slow electrons” for obtaining of PhD in physics and mathematics on April 21, 1977.

At the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Shafranyosh has defended the thesis “Processes of inelastic interactions of electrons with excited atoms”, and was awarded the scientific degree of the Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences in December 23, 1993.  For the first time he has determined the absolute effective cross sections of excitation of spectral transitions from the metastable states of atoms of alkaline earth elements, thallium, copper and sodium, has measured the energy dependences of the excitation cross sections of spectral transitions of atoms at the range of electron energies from process thresholds up to 30 eV and has obtained the data on the absolute ionization cross sections of these atoms and their energy dependence. The resonance structure on the threshold regions of the energy dependences of the excitation cross sections of the metastable states was found and explanation of the nature of its origin was given. The main regularities and mechanisms of the processes of inelastic interactions of electrons with excited atoms are proposed. Ivan Shafranyosh is a co-author of a new scientific direction in investigating the processes of inelastic interactions of electrons with biomolecules. Pioneer studies of the excitation and ionization processes of biomolecules by slow electrons are fulfilled by him. The most significant scientific achievements are: obtaining the new data on the processes of excitation and ionization of excited atoms, superelastic electron scattering, inelastic interactions of slow electrons with biomolecules located in different phase states. Areas of scientific interests: atomic physics, electron collision physics, biophysics. He has more than 227 scientific works, 3 inventors’ rights.

Since 1994, Shafranyosh is engaged in pedagogical activity along with his scientific activities. He was awarded the title of professor at December 25, 1997. He lectures: “General physics”, “Physics of electron collisions”, “Vacuum and plasma electronics”, “Interaction of bioobjects with physical fields”, “Methods of registration of small streams of charged particles”, conducts seminars, practical and laboratory classes. He supervises the scientific work of graduate students, course and diploma papers of students. Under his guidance, PhD theses were performed and defended by Snigurskaya T.A., Margitich M.O., Marushka V.I.

Ivan Shafranyosh is currently working as the Head of the Department of Quantum Electronics at the Faculty of Physics, UzhNU.
