Dear Colleagues,<\/p>\n

Happy New Year! As I assume the role of APS president for 2025, I feel honored to serve our community and advance the important work we do together. I am especially pleased that during my tenure we will celebrate the\u00a0International Year of Quantum Science and Technology<\/a>\u00a0(IYQ), an opportunity to highlight the transformative impact of quantum science and its potential to shape the future. I look forward to working with you to make the most of this exciting moment for our field.<\/p>\n

As you may know,\u00a0the United Nations proclaimed<\/a>\u00a02025 to be the IYQ. Our Society is a founding partner of this worldwide celebration, and is committed to spreading the word about the second quantum revolution, a century after the initial development of quantum mechanics. With the rise of quantum technologies, we can envision their application across many sectors, fueling important advances.<\/p>\n

Throughout my career, I have deeply valued international scientific collaboration. APS is proud to serve as the professional home to members in more than one hundred nations, and I appreciate IYQ\u2019s focus on engaging a global audience, expanding awareness about the power of quantum physics, and spreading opportunities for education and research to every continent.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

IYQ provides APS, and the entire physics community, the opportunity to amplify the impact of physics on society and to expand the broader public\u2019s scientific literacy. I hope you\u2019ll join us for the\u00a0activities and events<\/a>\u00a0APS has planned to mark IYQ and that you\u2019ll attend and connect at the\u00a0Global Physics Summit<\/a>\u00a0this coming March in Anaheim, California.<\/p>\n

I also encourage you, as well as your unit or department, to plan and sponsor your own engagement activities to observe IYQ. Please submit your events via\u00a0this webform<\/a>\u00a0so that APS staff can add them to a\u00a0public-facing calendar<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0IYQ website<\/a>\u00a0and include them in a final report to UNESCO.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to acknowledge the generous sponsors and donors who have partnered with APS to offer our exciting slate of events for public engagement, scientific discussions, and educational programs. It\u2019s through these strong collaborations that APS will continue to serve as a leader in strengthening the many possibilities quantum science offers. In the meantime, I ask you to consider ways you and your colleagues can champion quantum science in 2025, and to follow IYQ on\u00a0LinkedIn<\/a>,\u00a0Facebook<\/a>,\u00a0Instagram<\/a>, and\u00a0X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s use this opportunity to capture the imaginations of aspiring physicists, and the public, as broadly as possible. Together, we can encourage the study of quantum physics in moving forward humankind\u2019s understanding of the world, introducing innovations that will power practical, positive change, and helping the public come to understand the potential of quantum science and technology, not only in the lab, but in everyday life.<\/p>\n
